Spring Forward to Weight Loss

Spring is the time for refreshment and renewal. As summertime and swimsuit season approach, many of us are ready to shed extra winter weight and start a new weight loss program. Sometimes simply restricting calories and making dietary changes will not give you the results you are looking for. There are many factors that can impede a woman’s struggle. Weight loss can seem especially challenging as the body ages and what once worked to help us lose weight, no longer does. As our body changes so must our approach to weight loss. So what can we do to spring forward our weight loss goals?

Balance the Scales
The first step to losing weight is to make sure that we have an accurate health assessment of where we currently are, and where we should be. One of the ways to obtain this information is through tools like bioelectrical impedance analysis or (BIA) which is a test that that can be done by your healthcare provider. BIA is the measurement of body fat in relation to lean tissue that can establish a baseline and track progress along the way. This test moves beyond the number of pounds on a scale – to how our body composition impacts our health.

Clear Out the Clutter – Spring Cleaning for the Body
Statistics show that more than 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals are released into the environment each year, and more than 1.2 billion pounds of pesticides are used in the United States alone. Even at very low levels, common environmental toxins can damage health and lead to decreased liver function and your body’s ability to lose unwanted weight. We can offset this by spring cleaning our system through nutritional detoxification programs. A detoxification program can help clear our minds and bodies of the clutter caused by the environment. By detoxifying the liver and helping our bodies work more efficiently, we can rev up metabolism, increase the body’s ability to rid itself of unwanted weight, increase energy levels, sleep better and feel better.

Taking Time Out
We need at least 20 minutes of downtime a day to relax and breathe, to let the body de-stress. We also need at least eight hours of non-interrupted quality sleep to empower our bodies to deal with stress. This is important because elevated stress levels can lead to increased cortisol levels and excess fat which accumulates near the waist. Exercise is also an ideal way to take a time out. Relaxation methods like Yoga or simply walking for 30 minutes a day can help jump start healthy weight loss.

Give Your Metabolism a Boost
To give your metabolism a boost make sure that you eat small meals throughout the day – and a healthy breakfast is the way to start your metabolism at the beginning of the day and balance out your blood sugar. Add weight and resistance training to your exercise program. The more lean muscle your body has, the more calories you will burn even when resting. Choose healthy, organic foods whenever possible. Drink plenty of water and make sure to take essential fatty acids. Taking a good, quality multi-vitamin with Omega 3’s will help increase energy levels and combat fatigue.

The Buddy System
There is strength in pairs. Choose a friend so that you can encourage each other to walk each day. Establishing a support system to celebrate success and have someone to share goals, accomplishments and discouragements along the way. And always stay focused on the positive.
